Three Mushrooms from the Forest of the City Guard
"THE TOKYO TOILET" project is a series of extraordinary public toilets that all tell their own unique story. Renowned architect Toyo Ito was inspired by nature for this toilet, located near the forest of the Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine – designing the toilet stalls to look like three mushrooms.
The three buildings are situated to create a feeling of openness and safety. Covered in mosaic earth-tone tiles, the small toilets blend in with the greenery of the forest behind. They are designed to be unobtrusive and quiet – allowing everyone to use them in peace.
Toyo Ito also designed the toilets to make them easy for everyone to use – including elderly people and parents with young children. The interiors maximize ease of use, safety, cleanliness and maintenance – which is why they feature so many of our TOTO products.
